In the SHU, we get “security” mattresses, the same ones used for mentally disturbed individuals in suicide watch. They are very thin, so much so that you might as well be sleeping on the steel bunk. They also don’t allow us to have spoons or sporks to eat our
food with. We are given paper “security spoons” (also used for inmates in suicide watch). The paper
spoons are small and are not good for food with sauce, broth or vegetables. They disintegrate!
