The basement in the building where we are housed is flooded with water, becoming a natural breeding ground for mosquitos and other insects. Furthermore, the windows do not have screens to keep insects freely entering our buildings.
In addition, the heaters are now on, there is no climate-control system and the pipes continuously leak — further creating ideal conditions for mosquitos. You can literally see mosquitos replenishing their populations, flying out holes in the walls from pipes that lead to the basement
Hundreds of inmates here are getting bitten throughout the night. Even though I am covered head to toe in long-sleeved clothing and even sleep under a sheet and blanket, even my ear lobes are covered in bites. One guy went with to medical with an entire arm swollen from infection due to the mosquito bites. He was turned away, only to later be sent back by an officer who was concerned. The doctor finally gave him steroids and antibiotics
We work together to systemically kill as many mosquitos as possible, but there is no end to this war.
